If you or someone you know is thinking about getting a rabbit for Easter, please read this article to see what's involved. Bunnies are great pets, but they're not low maintenance and aren't for everyone. Two things to keep in mind: we recommend paper-based litter instead of wood-based, and larger enclosures for the buns.

Twitchell has been a complete joy and has touched all our lives. In fact, I now have several of my friends interested in adopting. He has been much better in his litter box and is getting more freedom through the house. He continues to eat well, enjoying kale, parsley, cilantro, & arugula. Of course he has maintained his daily romaine feeding. He is completely switched to Oxbow T essentials food and seems to be doing well with this. I have included a link to a short youtube video I posted of himgoodharedayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767159181136583795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9198970404627604454.post-6702577281230093792014-03-04T18:42:00.000-08:002014-03-04T18:42:54.144-08:00Update on Skylar3/4/2014

Hello to everyone at the SEPA-DE House Rabbit Society!

I wanted to give all the volunteers an overdue update on Skylar. Since I adopted her last August, Sky, as I usually call her, has settled in very well.

She quickly asserted herself as the head of the house - as soon as I bunny-proofed as much of the apartment as I could and let her explore, she set about claiming all of my stuff as hers...the couch was the first place she claimed, followed by my bed as soon as she was able to jump up onto it. She is quite the jumper - the top of my bed is a little under three feet tall, but she can hop up and off it without trouble! Most mornings after I let her out of her pen, she jumps up to join me in bed to nudge me out to feed her. Sometimes she will let me pet her while I'm in "her" nest, and she'll close her eyes and occasionally flop over to let me know how much she enjoys the attention.

My boyfriend is her favorite person - she loves it when he comes over, and binkies when he plays with and pets her.

Sky tolerates my clipping her nails and brushing her coat - a bit of carrot or a homemade bunny biscuit quickly makes sure I'm back in her good graces. The biscuit recipe I got off of the main HRS website - just some ground bunny pellets, ground oats, pureed carrot, and a bit of honey, then the mixture is rolled out and baked 'til it's firm. Sky absolutely loves them!

I hope that many more bunnies are able to find good homes from your shelter. I know they will make people as happy as Sky makes me!
You are all very much appreciated!
The weather was not as forecast yesterday. What was supposed to be about 1-2 inches of snow starting at 3:00 turned into 8 inches that started at 10:00. By then it was too late to cancel or postpone. We don't usually get snow this early in the year, so it was a surprise to us all! Next year we will plan a snow date, and post any updated here on the website.
There are still lots of good things in the store to purchase for your buns, so please stop in on a Saturday between 11:00 and 3:00. We have Bunny Grab Bags, lots of willow toys, Cottontail Cottages, Hay, Kibble, and really cool Loungers that are great hay racks for the larger buns, and beds for the smaller ones! Please stop in and get some presents for your buns and you can also purchase presents for a shelter resident too!
For people we have really nice rabbit Calendars, and some beautiful rabbit jewelry. There is also a great selection of home made soaps, and lip balms that were generously donated to the shelter by one of our Adopters. All proceeds directly benefit the shelter buns, and they make great gifts. We also had donated some beautify rabbits prints, that would be a great gift for the rabbit lover in your life, and for yourself. Hope to see you soon!
However, the depressed economy has hit our shelter very hard on several different fronts. We are very fortunate to have survived the recession due, in no small part, to your continued financial support. Understandably, donations have decreased, while at the same time more rabbits are in need of rescue. An alarming trend, of late, finds many rabbits being abandoned in the wild left to try to fend for themselves or left behind in a home or backyard hutch when their owners move. We recently participated in a very serious rescue effort involving more than 200 neglected rabbits from a "rescue" in MD. While we could only accept 14 of those rabbits, almost all of them required extensive medical intervention just to help them survive and rehabilitate in order to ready them for adoption. And, in just a few short months, we received 5 moms with their newborn babies. This, along with an across the board increase in rent, utilities, supplies (food, hay, litter, etc.) and medical expenses have rendered our bank account dangerously low. As we attempt to find new ways to raise income to support our mission, we find it necessary at this point, to send out a plea to our supporters, friends and adopters for help. Please consider sending a tax-deductible donation in any amount to assist us in our efforts on behalf of our rabbits. Please know that no donation is too small or that would not have a positive impact towards our financial situation. For example, a $10.00 donation will provide hay to feed our shelter bunnies for one week; $25.00 could supply an entire week's worth of pellets or almost a full week of veggies. Each and every donation matters and will be of great benefit to the bunnies!

Donations will gratefully be accepted through our Paypal button which can be found on our website (www.rabbit.org/chapters/se-pennsylvania) or our blog, Good Hare Day (goodhareday@blogspot.com). Donations may also be mailed directly to our shelter at:

SEPA-DE House Rabbit Society
478 E. Ayre St.
Newport, DE 19804-2513

Checking with your employer to see if they offer matching funds will double the impact of your donation! Many employers also offer direct payroll deduction for charitable donations.

A donation acknowledgement and receipt will happily be provided!

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of our Annual Pictures With Santa, which will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2013, from Noon-3:00pm. Santa Claus has made time in his busy schedule to take pictures with your bunny! A second, non-Holiday, theme will also be available. There will be raffles and our popular Santa Sacks for sale. Our L.L. Bun store will be fully-stocked with bunny essentials, as well as Oxbow and Busy Bunny items. Complimentary refreshments will be available along with free nail trims for your bunny. We always enjoy visiting with our alumni & their families, so please consider joining us for this annual event! (Please email Joyce at Yardkitty@msn.com for directions or if you have any questions).

Volunteers are always needed to help clean and feed our shelter bunnies, especially on Saturdays. For volunteer information, please contact Rachael Danton (r.danton@yahoo.com) and she will be happy to assist you with questions or scheduling.

As 2013 winds down and we look forward to the beginning of a New Year, please remember to check our website and our blog for shelter news and new fundraisers. Your continued, generous support is vital to the future of our rescue efforts and we cannot do this without your help! Thank you!

I just wanted to let you all know that Babs is doing well. Although she is still a little standoffish, she will let me scratch her head without batting at me! I know it will take some time to earn her trust. She is a very good girl when she is roaming around the house. She really likes the dining room area and hides out under the chairs, which is exactly where my other rabbit used to hang out.

Here is an update on The Fonz:
After a very short time we now have a very spoiled bunnie. As you can see he is getting and loving all the attention he can get. He is chattering his teeth on occasion when he is playing on the bed. He has head butted John when he would stop petting him, and will just crawl all over John and Aubrie when they are just letting him roam.

He is spending on average of 3-5 hours at a time out of his cage just roaming the room. He has not yet had an accident and will bounce into his cage, eat and use his litter box and then just jump out and continue his roaming.

He so far has been exposed to Romaine lettuce, fresh carrot tops, grapes, strawberry tops. Grapes and strawberries are not on his "like" list!

Here is an update on Beasley, now names Tundra:

Tundra's doing really well. His fur is beautiful now and he's been eating
regularly for the past few weeks. He seems to be completely settled in his
home finally. He's also turned into quite the little climber! His new
favorite activity is to jump on top of Coco's cage and stretch out while
grooming every inch of her towel while she stretches out in her bed inside
And an update on Whinney

In celebration of Independence Day, we decided to give Whinney some freedom today. She has progressed amazing this week- she takes craisins from Holly, she allows us all to walk up to her to pet her, and she isn’t jumpy when we are around or when she hears normal everyday house noises. She likes when Holly reads to her and she allows us to sit in her pen with her and she walks around us, nudging us out of her way. She only uses her box, doesn’t go anywhere else.

We opened her pen and she immediately began to explore- she sniffed every corner of the two carpeted rooms, did some binky jumps, sped from one room to another with some kicks thrown in, and took a long afternoon nap in the corner.
Here is an update from them:Sunday is Easter! Turns out, it is also the boys' (Binx and Drako, AKA: Hanson and Mack) 1 year anniversary since we adopted them!! I thought it would be a good time to email you and let you know that they are doing wonderfully. They are anxiously awaiting an Easter basket full of goodies for them to play with!

They are certainly not the same little boys that we brought home a year ago. They have come out of their shells so much more than I ever could have expected. It's hard to believe they are the same bunnies. Binx craves pets every day. A couple weeks ago, I almost fell over because Drako seemed to be asking for pets too. It was surprising because, while Drako enjoys my company, he never really wanted to be pet. Sure enough, that was what he wanted, and he was in heaven. I guess he took notice of how much Binx enjoyed it, and figured he'd give it a try as well. Now, Drako regularly allows me to pet him.

The boys are happy as can be every day when they come out in their playpen/den attached to our bedroom. They get about 5 hours every day where they can go in and out of their condo as they please and practice their binkies. For Christmas, they got a maze from binkybunnyand they both go absolutely nutso as soon as I set it up. They also have a tunnel that they love to chase each other through.

Why should dogs have all the fun?

Dog-Shaming has become popular recently. We Rabbit People love our rabbits, but we know they are not always on their best behavior. This happened this morning while I was getting ready for work. Hubert made quick work of the covers that were there to protect the wires. Does he feel shame for it? That is up for debate.

It’s a lot of fun going to the shelter every month but so easy to fall in love with some of the bunnies and want to take them home. I fell in love with a little boy named Caleb. My husband Jim said no – that four was enough. I was sad but understood since we had just adopted Honey & Jake in October and also have Maggie & Kringle (2 senior/special needs bunnies). Well I guess the universe had other plans -- haha! Less than a week after discussing it, there was a white bunny with pink eyes in our yard. We were able to catch him and brought him in. No one claimed him and actually that was good because we liked him instantly of course J. We brought him to the vet to get checked out and a couple months later we had him neutered. We named him Lucky because he was very lucky to have survived outside without any harm coming to him. So Jim says “looks like we can get Caleb” and gave me a look like I somehow planned it! Haha! Interesting how life works out. J They bonded really quick and are the best of friends! They make us laugh so much always running around and playing. So now we have six! Hmmm….. there was a show called “Eight is Enough”……. Hehe…….

It is so great to see the bunnies find such a happy home!

Tudi wanted to say "hi" to all the humans that took care of her. She is
adjusting well to her new home. She was a little shy at first but now will often
come to the front of the cage where she loves to lay while you pet her. She'll
hop out of her cage for a brief look around and then go right back in to rest.
I'm not sure if she's still warming up to us or just really lazy. She is doing a
great job using her litterbox and loves her romaine lettuce. Still has an
attitude when I go to feed her but will let us pet her for hours once she has a
full belly. The kids are enjoying reading to her which I think she enjoys. Thank
you for introducing us.
Yay!

There is still several beautiful pairs at the shelter waiting for their forever homes. Pairs that are already bonded make everything so much easier! And they are twice the fun!

Meet Emme and Redford. Emme is the grey and white lop, and Redford is the handsome red boy. They were adopted a few years ago, and recently returned to the shelter. Nothing they did, which is pretty much always the case. Their human got a new spouse who was allergic to the buns, or their hay. They had a hard time adjusting back to shelter life. It must be scary to be in a home, only to lose it and your humans. Emme had already been passes around several homes before coming to the shelter originally. They are doing so much better now, but it would be great to see them in their new home soon!

This is Tori and Dori. They are very loving sisters. They were born at the Humane Society of Hartford County, after their Mom came into that shelter pregnant.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LW4jBUo1Lqc/T3eZtrqz78I/AAAAAAAAAJE/XVJnP07ihiw/s320/Tori%2Band%2BDori.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726214461320327106" />

Below are Parvati and Padma. They are also sisters. Their former family also did not keep them due to allergies.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jswlytIVIXA/T3eao2id4XI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/kaao4gW2ZAU/s320/Parvati%2Band%2BPadma.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726215477850399090" />

And although Kane is not a pair, he is the biggest bunny at the shelter right now. He is about 9.5 to 10 pounds. He was found stray the day after Hurricane Irene last year. It was scary being inside during the hurricane. I cant imagine how afraid he was being outside loose during the whole thing! He was brought into the shelter malnourished and with ear infections. He is now a big healthy boy. He loves to break out of his pen so he can have full run of the shelter. He is always a very good boy when he has been out loose, and would do well with free range of the house.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-__jef0hi9wk/T3ecEq8C6LI/AAAAAAAAAJc/Qb6K-6pgRsc/s320/KaneC.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726217055284422834" />

One trend you see in the stories above,is people not wanting their pets anymore due to allergies. Please be sure you and you whole family will be OK before bringing any animal into your home. If you are unsure if anyone has allergies, spend time with another families pets. Maybe pet sit for them for a weekend. You can also volunteer at the shelter. There are also many great medicines out there to control symptoms, and allergy shots are also a big help. Many times people are not allergic to the rabbit, but they are reacting to the hay or the litter box smells. Cleaning the litter box frequently, and keeping the hay in a closed bag or box will help. Unfortunately, many doctors make giving up the animals their very first suggestion before other ways are given a good chance.

goodharedayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767159181136583795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9198970404627604454.post-90193368860513887582012-02-12T15:53:00.000-08:002012-02-12T16:34:21.616-08:00A Note from Livingston

Hello! Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Livingston and I moved
in with Reilly, Cathy and Clay last Friday, 2/3.

I’d been living at the shelter for almost a year, and was about a year old when I arrived. Clay took a liking to me and made sure I had a nice cage with a fine view.
Before the shelter, I was passed from one family to nother. The first family couldn’t afford me; I’m a big boy and do like to eat. My time with the second family
was short lived and ended with their divorce. At least I was lucky enough to find my way to the shelter – I don’t want to think of some of the other ways things
could have turned out. Thanks to everyone at the shelter for taking such good care of me.

I was introduced to Reilly at the shelter on a Tuesday afternoon. She
was sad and lonely and in need of a companion. The loss of her friend
Zeta had hit her hard. I tried to be on my best behavior, but I couldn’t help
myself and had to flirt a little. She’s so sweet!
I was surprised to find myself in her house just a few days later. My new
home! I am having a ball running and binkying all over the place, and getting kisses. I’m a lucky bun!
Livingston

goodharedayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767159181136583795noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9198970404627604454.post-61278299464107943642012-01-21T13:07:00.001-08:002012-01-21T13:12:57.042-08:00New Alumni PageCheck out our new Alumni page to the right.
Send us your letter or pictures for the bunnies you have adopted! Just like people, some get along wonderfully, and some do not.
If you are thinking of adding more than one bunny to your home, why not consider adopting buns that have already been bonded! They don't take up too much more space than a single bunny.

We have several at the shelter, waiting for their forever homes!
Meet Georgia, Cocoa Puff and S'mores. These girls were born to Dove. Her story is heartbreaking. Dove was found stray by the side of the road. Her mate had been hit by a car, and she wouldn't leave him. She was already pregnant, and gave birth to 7 babies at the shelter. These three sisters are very loving with each other. A trio is 3 times the fun!

Meet Mr. Peepers and Teddi Beara. They are some of our longer time residents. They were put together, and it was Love at First Sight! They dote on each other constantly. Don't think that they wont want affection from you, since they are so bonded to each other. They both love (especially Mr Peepers!) to be petted and loved on by the volunteers at the shelter.

And previously introduced in the blog, but please meet again, Hanson and Mack
Hanson & Mack are cuteness times two! They (& two other brothers) were born just a few days after their mom was rescued by a Good Samaritan where she was discovered living under a car. Mom and her 4 babies were brought to the shelter and put into foster care where they could grow into experienced house bunnies. These loving cuties are very curious and enjoy running around and practicing their binkies.

If you would love to share your home with any of these beautiful pairs or trios, hop over to our adoption application so this bun can start a new life at your home!
goodharedayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767159181136583795noreply@blogger.com0
